A Brief History of Prestbury

Prestbury

Situated on the River Bollin, just beyond the northern boundary of Macclesfield town, is Prestbury. It is a long and narrow parish that extends along the Bollin Valley towards Wilmslow, and includes a great deal of dairy-farming country.

One of the oldest buildings is the Priest’s House,a timber-framed building dating back to about 1448 which is now a bank. Also of interest is the Reading Room, a building erected in 1720, this is now housing a branch library, a bank, an estate agent’s and the Parish Council Chamber. Dominating the centre, however, is the parish church of St Peter, a building largely of the 13th century but restored in 1879 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. In the churchyard is the church’s Norman predecessor, a chapel largely rebuilt in 1747
